This medium-sized, widely suckering agave typically grows to a height of 4 to 6 feet and spreads 6 to 7 feet wide. It features long, stiff, narrow leaves that are white to very pale green with grey-green spineless margins, ending in a 1-inch terminal spine. Occasionally, older plants develop a short stem and a yellow stripe on some leaves. The plant forms a robust rosette shape. The agave blooms infrequently, with mature plants producing 15 to 20-foot tall flower stalks bearing yellow flowers and viviparous plantlets. Originating from Yucatán, it is likely a hybrid between Agave angustifolia and A. kewensis, introduced internationally by the International Succulent Introduction in 2002. Thriving in full to part sun, it requires occasional watering but grows faster with regular irrigation. It is deer tolerant and has low water needs, suitable for xeriscaping. Hardy to temperatures around 25°F to 30°F (USDA zones 9b to 10a), it can withstand mild frost but needs protection from significant freezes. The Variegated Hemp Agave is valued for its ornamental variegated foliage and historical significance for its fiber, grown commercially in the tropics and subtropics.
