The gray-green to blue-green stems have four to six angled ribs, constrictions at regular intervals and paired spines along the ridges, giving the plant a strongly architectural, cactus-like appearance. It is essentially leafless, although small temporary leaves may appear on new growth. Mature plants can reach about 5 feet tall, with individual stems generally 1–2 inches thick. Small yellow cyathia appear near the upper stems, usually in spring to early summer. Native to dry, rocky areas of South Africa's Cape provinces, particularly the Noorsveld and surrounding Karoo regions, it is adapted to full sun, drought and sharply drained soils. Grow Euphorbia coerulescens in a well-drained cactus or succulent mix and allow the soil to dry between thorough waterings. Reduce watering during cool or wet winter conditions. It is generally suited to USDA Zone 9b and warmer and may tolerate light frost, but prolonged freezing temperatures and winter wet should be avoided. Its upright, spiny form makes it useful in dry gardens, rock gardens, gravel plantings and large containers. As with other Euphorbias, its milky sap can irritate skin and eyes.
