gasteria-bicolor-1ga
Gasteria bicolor - 1ga

Gasteria bicolor, commonly known as lawyer’s tongue, is an evergreen succulent from the Eastern Cape of South Africa grown for its spotted, tongue-shaped leaves and adaptability to a range of conditions. It forms small clumps of fleshy, pointed leaves typically about 6 to 8 inches long, though size and form vary. Leaves are dark green with scattered white spots and may develop reddish or orange tones at the tips in brighter light. Young plants often display a flat, two-ranked arrangement, later transitioning into a loose rosette as they mature, sometimes with a slight keel along the underside. Plants are usually stemless when young but may develop short stems over time and offset freely to form clusters. Flowering typically occurs from late winter into spring, with slender, sometimes branched inflorescences bearing small, pendent tubular flowers that are pink with white and green tones. Native to regions near Port Elizabeth, the species was once known as Gasteria maculata but was renamed under botanical rules. In cultivation it performs best in well-drained soil with low water and prefers light shade or filtered light, though it tolerates brighter coastal conditions. It is moderately frost tolerant to around 20–25°F with protection advised in colder conditions. Gasteria bicolor is widely used as a container or indoor plant and works well in shaded succulent plantings where its compact size and patterned foliage provide consistent visual interest.
