For cold climates with upcoming sub-32-degree temperatures within five days of your order, we strongly advise adding a heat pack. Orders without a heat pack will not include one.

A tough, compact aloe native to the dry interior of South Africa and Botswana, Aloe grandidentata (commonly known as the Dwarf Soap Aloe) forms dense colonies of low, stemless rosettes under 1 foot tall. The dark green leaves are decorated with dull white spots on both surfaces and lined with prominent white teeth along the margins—giving the plant a bold, sculptural texture.
Older leaves often dry at the tips to a papery tan, while younger foliage may display faint H-shaped patterns. In early spring, this species sends up 2–3 foot tall branching flower stalks topped with coral-pink to dull red tubular blooms. These nectar-rich flowers attract pollinators such as hummingbirds and bees, adding seasonal movement and color.
Highly drought-tolerant and adapted to heat and sun, Aloe grandidentata thrives in full sun to part shade with sharply draining soil. Water deeply but only after the soil has fully dried. Cold hardy to 20–25°F (USDA Zone 9a+), it performs well in dry gardens, rockeries, and containers. Once established, it spreads slowly by suckering to form attractive mounds with minimal care.
Its name references the “large teeth” along its leaf margins, while the common name “soap aloe” stems from its mildly foaming sap, historically used as a skin cleanser. Though smaller than many aloes, this species offers impressive durability, strong visual character, and early-season blooms.
