Cold Climates - Add Heat Pack
For cold climates with upcoming sub-32-degree temperatures within five days of your order, we strongly advise adding a heat pack. Orders without a heat pack will not include one.
To prevent plants from freezing while in transit, orders placed for areas with severe freezing temperatures will be held for shipment until it is safe to ship.
Agave 'Blue Flame' is a hybrid succulent combining the soft, flexible foliage of Agave attenuata with the increased hardiness and subtle serration of Agave shawii. Its smooth, blue-green leaves form tight rosettes that reach up to 2.5 feet tall and 3 feet wide, with older clumps spreading up to 10 feet. A waxy coating enhances its blue coloration, and its flexible leaves make it safer for foot traffic. It produces a tall, arching flower spike with yellow-green flowers, after which the blooming rosette dies, though offsets ensure its continued growth. Developed in the 1960s at UCLA’s Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden and later introduced by the Huntington Botanic Garden in 2005, this hybrid is more cold-hardy than A. attenuata while maintaining its smooth form. Thriving in full to partial sun, it prefers well-draining soil and benefits from occasional watering to enhance its blue hue. Hardy to 20–25°F, it tolerates light frost but may require protection in colder climates. Ideal for drought-tolerant gardens, rock gardens, and modern landscapes, it pairs well with succulents and other low-water plants. Its clumping growth makes it useful for borders and mass plantings, and it is considered fire-wise, suitable for defensible space landscaping.
