Aloe aristata, commonly known as Lace Aloe or Torch Plant, is a compact, evergreen succulent native to South Africa and Lesotho. It forms dense, clustering rosettes of dark green, triangular leaves adorned with white tubercles and soft, lacy margins. The foliage may develop reddish hues under stress or cold exposure. In late spring to early summer, mature plants produce tall, branched inflorescences with coral-orange tubular flowers that attract pollinators such as bees and hummingbirds. This drought-tolerant species thrives in full sun to partial shade, requiring well-draining soil and infrequent watering to prevent root rot. It multiplies readily through offsets, forming low-growing, spreading mounds over time. Hardy to USDA Zones 7-10, Aloe aristata tolerates temperatures down to 15-20°F, with reports suggesting it can survive brief exposure to near 0°F if kept dry. Formerly classified as an Aloe, taxonomic revisions in 2014 reassigned it to the monotypic genus Aristaloe. Well-suited for rock gardens, xeriscaping, and containers, it is a versatile, low-maintenance plant that adapts well to both outdoor and indoor cultivation.
