Aloe classenii, a colorful succulent native to Kenya, forms a mass of lime green and bright red rosettes. Its plastic-like leaves spread horizontally along creeping stems, reaching up to 18 inches tall and 2 feet wide. Foliage colors intensify in full sun, with reddish blushes appearing under harsh conditions. In late fall to winter, it blooms with dark reddish buds maturing into dark pink flowers, accentuated by orange stamens on slender inflorescences up to 30 inches tall. Found in rocky outcrops in southeastern Kenya, it's named after geologist George A. Classen. Hardy to 25°F, it's best suited for ground cover due to its prolific offsetting and attractive foliage.
