Aloe congolensis is a small clustering aloe, reaching 6 to 8 inches in height, with tight 5-inch-wide rosettes on stems sprawling up to 2 feet long. Its short, bright green shiny leaves are wedge-shaped with a slight recurved tip and sharp teeth, often turning reddish-brown when stressed. This bright green plant forms small rosettes of stiff, plastic-like leaves with exceptionally large teeth, growing from tightly-spaced rosettes on sprawling stems. Flowering occurs in late fall to winter on solitary racemes rising about a foot above the leaves, with peach-orange flowers appearing in full sun. The plant, thought to originate from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is known for its aggressive offsetting and ability to cover an area. It thrives in full sun to light shade with occasional irrigation, but is prone to aloe mite damage and requires protection from hard frosts, being hardy only to 28 to 30°F. Aloe congolensis is a versatile plant, suitable for rock gardens, succulent and cactus gardens, xeriscape plantings, containers, and hanging baskets, offering ornamental drooping branches and resistance to deer.
