Aloe dichotoma, also known as Quiver tree, stands out as one of the largest Aloes, forming an incredibly tough tree with elegantly tapered branches adorned with succulent rosettes of aloe leaves. Found in arid habitats in Namibia and South Africa, it may reach over 80 years of age and towering heights of approximately 7 meters, oftentimes playing host to large colonial nests of social weaver birds. The trunk, swollen and aged, develops fissures and a rich character with its gold/brown bark peeling off in segments. The branches, smooth and coated with a thin layer of whitish powder, create a dense, rounded crown adorned with bluish leaves featuring teeth along the margins. In winter, bright yellow flowers grace the tips of the branches, drawing birds, insects, and baboons with their copious nectar. With a name referring to its repeatedly forking branches, Aloe dichotoma is a prominent component of arid landscapes, valued not only for its beauty but also for its medicinal uses. Thriving in rocky, well-drained soil under full sun to part shade, it adds a striking presence to hot and dry rock gardens or large containers, showcasing its spread-root-system and frost resistance down to 23 degrees F.
