Aloe longistyla is a small South African dwarf aloe that forms clusters of 6 to 8-inch-wide rosettes with upright blue-green leaves. A distinct trait of this aloe is the presence of thick, pale, soft spines on its lower leaf surfaces and margins. It is a tough plant, resembling Aloe humilis, with compact rosettes of densely crowded lanceolate leaves. The leaves have a waxy layer and range in color from forest green to pale blue or bluish-green, with long teeth along the margins and backs of leaves. Flowering occurs in fall to winter, with short, thick, unbranched inflorescences bearing up to fifty deep orange to salmon red or coral-red tubular flowers. The top halves of the flowers curve upwards to expose unusually long stamens. Originating from the summer rainfall regions of the Western Cape Province of South Africa, it is vulnerable and should not be removed from its natural environment. Aloe longistyla thrives in full sun to light shade and well-drained soil, with occasional irrigation in summer. It is cold hardy to around the low 20s Fahrenheit and adds a fiery glow to gardens, making it suitable for landscaping, rock gardens, sloping banks, or containers.
