Aloidendron pillansii, formerly known as Aloe pillansii, is a succulent tree native to southern Africa, characterized by its impressive stature and unique adaptations to desert environments. It features a robust trunk and erect branches holding large rosettes of arching silver-grey leaves with small pale yellow teeth on the margins. This slow-growing tree can reach heights of 10 meters or more, with stems that develop swollen bottle-shaped trunks in old specimens. The plant's succulent leaves and roots serve as water reservoirs during droughts, and a white powdery substance on the stems reflects intense heat away from the plant. Aloidendron pillansii produces yellow flowers in mid-spring, with up to 30 flowers on each raceme. Named after Neville S. Pillans, it is confined to a small region in north-western South Africa and southwestern Namibia, where it faces critical endangerment due to factors such as poaching and habitat loss. Cultivation requires full sun, well-drained soil, and protection from frost. Despite its size, A. pillansii adapts well to cultivation and makes a striking addition to gardens, particularly when grown in large containers to showcase its beauty.
