Agave ‘Chunky Monkey’ is a bold, medium-sized hybrid agave grown for its thick, upright leaves, powerful architectural form, and notable cold tolerance for a plant of its scale. It forms a solitary, robust rosette typically 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, with broad gray leaves that radiate upward and outward rather than spreading flat. Individual leaves can reach up to 3 feet long and are strongly keeled beneath, armed with well-spaced brown marginal teeth and finished with a thick brown terminal spine, giving the plant a heavy, muscular appearance that reads clearly from a distance. Flowering is infrequent, but a related seedling has produced a towering inflorescence branching at around 15 feet, with rose-colored buds opening to bright yellow flowers on horizontal side branches; the plant is expected to be monocarpic, flowering once at maturity before declining. ‘Chunky Monkey’ originated from seed collected on Agave parassana and is presumed to be a hybrid between Agave parassana and Agave salmiana, with the name applied by Brian Kemble of the Ruth Bancroft Garden and later retained by San Marcos Growers. It grows best in full sun with excellent drainage and very infrequent irrigation once established, is well adapted to summer-dry conditions, and is deer tolerant. Cold hardiness is estimated to around 15°F. This agave is best used as a dramatic specimen in dry landscapes or large containers, placed well away from walkways due to its size, sharp spines, and caustic sap.
