Agave ‘Cornelius’, often called Quasimoto Agave, is a slow-growing, variegated agave cultivated for its thick, contorted leaves and compact, sculptural habit. It forms small clumps of short, heavy rosettes that typically reach about 18 inches tall and spread 2 to 4 feet wide over time as offsets develop close to the parent plant. The leaves are broad, stiff, and strongly undulating, marked with yellow and green variegation over a blue-green base, and edged with dark marginal teeth and a sharp terminal spine. Flowering has not been reliably documented in cultivation, and while it is expected to behave like other monocarpic agaves by flowering once and declining, its inflorescence remains unknown, contributing to long-standing uncertainty about its species affiliation. The plant has circulated in California collections for decades under many names and was once loosely associated with Agave americana, though morphology and growth habit suggest it is better treated as a cultivar of unknown hybrid origin. In cultivation it prefers full sun, excellent drainage, and low water, with careful avoidance of winter moisture. Cold tolerance is reported between roughly 17 and 25°F when kept dry. It is best used as a container specimen or focal accent in small, curated succulent plantings where its unusual form can be viewed up close.
