Agave filifera var. schidigera, commonly known as Maguey Century Plant, is a compact, evergreen succulent native to central Mexico, recognized for its dark green, upright rosettes edged with curly white fibers and white streaks. Growing between 12-20 inches tall and 18-24 inches wide, it remains mostly solitary with limited offset production. Its stiff leaves, tipped with sharp points, require careful handling. This drought-tolerant species thrives in full sun to partial shade with well-draining, gritty, or rocky soil, making it well-suited for xeriscapes, rock gardens, and containers. It requires minimal watering once established and should remain dry in winter. Hardy to USDA Zones 8a-12, it tolerates temperatures down to 20°F but benefits from protection in colder climates. Like most Agaves, it is monocarpic, producing a tall, wine-colored flower spike after several decades before the main rosette dies, though offsets may continue the plant’s life cycle. Highly resistant to heat, humidity, wind, deer, and pests, it serves as a striking focal point in arid landscapes, architectural plantings, and container gardens.
