Agave montana, commonly called mountain agave, is a large, solitary species native to the high mountains of northeastern Mexico, where it grows in cool pine–oak forests at elevations around 8,500–10,000 feet. It forms a dense, symmetrical rosette typically about 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, composed of short, broad leaves arranged in a compact, layered pattern that gives the plant an artichoke-like appearance. Leaves are dark green to yellowish green and often display pale bluish wax along the ridges as well as prominent bud imprints—impressions left by neighboring leaves while still in the central cone—which remain visible after the leaves expand. Margins are lined with large hooked teeth, commonly reddish-brown, and each leaf ends in a stout terminal spine. Like most agaves, the plant flowers once at maturity, sending up a thick flower stalk that may reach roughly 11 to 15 feet tall and carry clusters of yellow flowers along short upper branches; buds and branching structures can show dark purplish-red coloration before opening. The species was formally described in 1996 by botanist José Ángel Villarreal and is closely related to Agave gentryi, though it typically remains solitary rather than forming offsets. In cultivation it grows best in full sun with excellent drainage and can tolerate occasional irrigation, adapting well to dry gardens despite originating from cooler, moister mountain habitats. Because of its strong form and solitary habit, Agave montana is commonly used as a focal specimen in succulent landscapes and large containers.
