Agave pedunculifera – Durango Soft Agave
A graceful, soft-leaved Mexican species native to volcanic cliffs in Sinaloa, Durango, Nayarit, and Jalisco. Agave pedunculifera forms low, solitary rosettes 2–3 ft tall and 3–4 ft wide with broad, smooth olive- to blue-green leaves that curve back elegantly. Margins bear minute, flexible teeth and end in a pliant tip that bends to the touch—earning it the name “Soft Agave.” Its gentle form recalls Agave attenuata but with a lower, trunkless habit and faintly toothed margins.

Description
Each rosette holds 30–40 satiny, lance-shaped leaves up to 30 in. long. The foliage reflects soft blue-green tones and recurs gracefully, creating a fountainlike form. Margins have small, rounded teeth, and the tip narrows into a flexible point. Mature plants occasionally offset and may form a short stem with age. When mature, an upright inflorescence exceeding 10 ft bears yellow flowers—erect rather than nodding like A. attenuata’s curved “foxtail” spike. The rosette dies after flowering, replaced by basal offsets.

Cultivation & Care
Thrives in cool sun to light shade with freely draining soil. Water moderately during warm months and allow the soil to dry between irrigations. More moisture-tolerant than most agaves but dislikes standing water. Hardy to 25–30 °F; best in coastal or Mediterranean climates. Inland, partial shade preserves its color and prevents scorch. Soft and spineless, it’s safe for patios, pathways, and courtyards. Minimal feeding or pruning required; remove old leaves as needed.

Landscape Use
An elegant architectural accent for dry gardens, courtyards, and containers. Its smooth leaves and gentle form provide visual relief among sharper agaves and aloes. Pairs beautifully with subtropical plantings, combining structure with softness in water-wise designs.
