Agave potatorum ‘El Camarón’ is a compact, solitary agave selection from the highlands of southern Mexico, grown for its dense, upright rosette and thick gray foliage. Mature plants typically reach about 1 to 2 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, forming a tight, symmetrical rosette that appears more vertical than many other forms of Agave potatorum. The leaves are broad, heavy, and gray to whitish gray, held upright before gently reflexing near the tips, which gives the plant a controlled, architectural outline. Along the leaf margins are closely spaced, small mammillate projections bearing fine red teeth, and each leaf ends in a reddish-brown terminal spine. Growth is slow, and plants usually remain solitary with little tendency to offset. Like other agaves, it is monocarpic, flowering once at maturity, often after a decade or more, when a tall stalk 10 to 20 feet high carries light green flowers flushed with red, after which the rosette declines. This cultivar originates from a localized population near the town of El Camarón, south of Oaxaca City, where seed collected in 2006 produced a single superior plant that was later vegetatively propagated and introduced. It performs best in full sun with very well-drained soil, requires minimal water once established, tolerates brief cold to about 25–30°F, and is well suited to containers, rock gardens, and low-water landscapes where a compact agave with a dense form is desired.
