Agave potatorum ‘Kichiokan’, often called Dwarf Butterfly Agave or Lucky Crown Agave, is a compact, evergreen agave cultivated for its small size, symmetrical rosette, and ornamental foliage. Generally considered a Japanese nursery selection associated with Agave potatorum, it remains slow growing and well suited to containers and small garden spaces. Plants typically form a tidy rosette under 1 foot tall and 1 to 2 feet wide, composed of short, thick, spoon-shaped leaves that are blue-gray to gray-green and often show subtle bud imprints. Leaf tips curve upward slightly, and margins may display pale yellow to creamy variegation depending on the clone. Prominent marginal teeth range from yellow to reddish brown with age, and each leaf terminates in a sharp spine. Plants are usually stemless and solitary but may slowly form small clusters over time. Flowering is infrequent and occurs only at maturity, when a tall spike bearing yellow flowers is produced, after which the rosette declines. This agave prefers full sun to light shade in very well-drained soil and low water, remaining mostly dry in winter. Cold tolerance is generally reported around 25–30°F. Its restrained size and refined form make it ideal for containers, troughs, and accent use in dry gardens.
