Agave titanota ‘Black and Blue’ is a compact, evergreen agave selected for its dense rosette and pronounced contrast between pale blue-gray leaves and very dark marginal teeth. Mature plants typically form tight rosettes about 1 to 2 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, with thick, broad leaves held in a slightly upright posture that gives the plant a rounded, controlled outline. The leaf surfaces are matte and smoky blue-gray, while the margins carry stout teeth that emerge lighter and darken to deep brown or near black with age, ending in a dark terminal spine. Growth is slow, and plants usually remain solitary for many years, though older specimens may offset lightly to form small clusters. Like other agaves, it is monocarpic and flowers only at maturity, producing a tall inflorescence with yellow flowers before the rosette declines. This cultivar originated from seed collected near Tepitizonga in Oaxaca, Mexico, and was selected by Kelly Griffin, later introduced and propagated by Rancho Soledad Nursery. It performs best in full sun with excellent drainage, requires low water once established, and tolerates brief cold to roughly 25–30°F when kept dry. Its moderate size and strong color contrast make it well suited as a focal plant in containers, raised beds, and low-water or modern landscape designs.
