Aloe angelica, commonly known as Wylliespoort aloe, is a large South African tree aloe native to the Soutpansberg and Blouberg mountains of Limpopo Province. It typically forms a solitary upright trunk reaching about 10 to 13 feet tall, occasionally branching with age, and retains a skirt of dried leaves around the upper stem. At the top sits a dense rosette of long, smooth green leaves that arch outward and strongly recurve downward, creating a graceful, fountain-like silhouette. The leaves are generally unspotted and lack surface ornamentation, though the margins are lined with small, sharp teeth. In winter, the plant produces a large, highly branched inflorescence carrying numerous compact racemes of tubular flowers. Buds emerge red to reddish-orange before opening yellow, creating a striking bicolored display across the flowering structure. Native to mountainous habitats in northern South Africa, Aloe angelica is closely related in appearance to Aloe thraskii and Aloe alooides, though it differs in floral structure and habitat preference. It performs best in full sun with well-drained soil and moderate to low irrigation once established, developing into a substantial specimen over time. The species is best suited to frost-free or lightly frosted climates, roughly corresponding to USDA Zones 9b–11. In the garden it is used primarily as an architectural focal plant, where its tall trunk, recurved foliage, and dramatic winter flowering provide strong vertical structure and contrast within Mediterranean and dry-climate landscapes.
