Aloe arborescens ‘Spineless’, commonly called toothless torch aloe, is a shrubby evergreen aloe derived from the South African species Aloe arborescens and distinguished by its reduced marginal teeth, which give the plant a softer texture than the typical form. It develops into a multi-stemmed shrub usually 4 to 6 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, with branching stems topped by rosettes about 18 inches across. Leaves are long, narrow, and recurved, colored dull green to yellow-green and sometimes flushed with orange or pink under drought or strong light. Unlike the species, the leaf edges are nearly smooth, lacking prominent teeth, while older leaves dry and persist along the stems, adding to its layered, woody structure. Flowering occurs from late fall into winter, when upright inflorescences rise above the foliage carrying dense clusters of tubular coral-red flowers that hang closely along the stalks and attract pollinators. This cultivar has been in cultivation since at least the early 2010s and is associated with specialty aloe collections, though its exact origin is unclear. Our parent plants were sourced from San Marcos Growers. It performs best in full sun to light shade with well-drained soil and requires little supplemental irrigation once established, tolerating coastal conditions and Mediterranean climates. Cold tolerance is moderate, with plants generally hardy to about 20–25°F. In the garden it is used as a structural shrub, informal hedge, or large container specimen, with the reduced armament making it more suitable for placement near pathways.
