Aloe barberae, commonly called tree aloe, is a large, evergreen succulent that develops into a true tree and is among the largest aloe-like plants in Africa. Native to eastern southern Africa, it grows into a tall, branching form that can reach 20 to 30 feet or more in cultivation, with a thick gray trunk that becomes buttressed at the base and supports a broad, rounded canopy of foliage. Branches divide repeatedly, each ending in rosettes of long, arching dark green leaves typically 1 to 2 feet in length, with small marginal teeth and a terminal spine. The overall form is clean and architectural, with a distinct trunk and elevated crown. Flowering occurs from fall into winter, when upright inflorescences rise above the foliage bearing clusters of tubular flowers that are usually rose-pink with greenish tones, attracting bird pollinators. The species occurs naturally in coastal forests, ravines, and dry valleys across regions including the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and Mozambique, where it experiences more moisture than many succulents but still requires good drainage. It was originally described in 1874 and is also known botanically as Aloidendron barberae, though the aloe name remains widely used in horticulture. In cultivation it performs best in full sun to light shade with well-drained soil and occasional watering once established, and it is tolerant of light frost to around 25–30°F. Because of its eventual size, Aloe barberae is best used as a long-term specimen tree in warm-climate landscapes where it provides height, structure, and year-round presence.
