Aloe bellatula, also known as the Fianarantsoa Aloe, is a small, stemless succulent native to Madagascar. This species is known for its clumping growth habit, dark green leaves that bronze under full sun, and winter-blooming coral-red flowers. Ideal for pots or in-ground planting with well-drained soil, it thrives as an evergreen in mild climates. The plant forms dense clumps of upright, narrow leaves that grow up to 6 inches long, featuring channeled surfaces covered in rough bumps, white spots, and soft teeth along the margins. It remains under 1 foot tall and spreads 1 to 2 feet wide, making it suitable for succulent gardens or containers. In winter, Aloe bellatula produces bright coral-red, bell-shaped flowers with pale tips on inflorescences up to 2 feet tall. Native to Madagascar’s Itremo Mountains, this species is hardy to 25-30°F and thrives in USDA zones 9-11. It prefers well-drained soil, full sun, or light shade and is drought-tolerant, making it ideal for small gardens or container displays.
