Aloe cameronii ‘Crème Tangerine’ is a medium-sized, suckering form of Aloe cameronii distinguished by its greener, more upright growth and variable orange-tinged foliage, differing from the familiar deep-red type common in California gardens. It forms loose clumps of 2- to 3-foot upright stems topped with open rosettes of broad, lance-shaped leaves that remain medium to dark green in shade or with regular irrigation but develop orange-red highlights under sun and lean watering. Plants typically grow 3 to 4 feet wide and maintain a slightly recurved leaf posture. From late fall through midwinter it produces tall, branched inflorescences about 2.5 feet high, bearing dense clusters of tubular flowers that open a vivid tangerine orange and fade gradually to a pale creamy orange; the bloom spikes are larger and taller than those of the typical species. Native to central Africa, Aloe cameronii has been documented in Malawi, and this greener variant—circulating in Southern California’s nursery trade—has been informally compared to Aloe cameronii var. bondana from high-elevation granite outcrops in Zimbabwe, though its identity remains unconfirmed. The name ‘Crème Tangerine,’ coined by Jeff Chemnick, reflects the flower color shift and nods to a Beatles lyric. In cultivation the plant thrives in full sun to light shade with well-drained soil and occasional irrigation, showing its best color under brighter, drier conditions. It tolerates dry summers and performs well in Mediterranean and arid climates but benefits from protection below about 25–30°F. In the garden it functions as a colorful accent or focal plant, offering red-tinged foliage, winter bloom, and a manageable clumping habit suitable for waterwise landscapes and mixed succulent plantings.
