Aloe capitata is a solitary, usually stemless succulent native to Madagascar, where it grows in mountainous regions including the Central Madagascan Highlands. It forms a rosette of approximately 20–30 thick, rigid, ascending leaves, each reaching about 20 inches long and 2.4 inches wide. The foliage is generally green to gray-green or blue-green, often developing pink, reddish, or deep maroon tones in bright light. Leaf margins have a reddish, hardened edge lined with sharp, red-brown teeth, while the rounded, toothed leaf tips and yellow-drying sap are additional identifying features. Plants growing in shade may develop an erect stem up to approximately 24 inches tall.

Flowering is the principal ornamental feature of this species. The erect inflorescence can reach about 32 inches tall and may produce up to four branches, each terminating in a dense, rounded cluster of yellow to orange-yellow, narrowly bell-shaped flowers. These capitate racemes may reach nearly 4 inches in diameter, with flowers opening progressively from the top downward. Blooming may occur from late fall into winter. The related Aloe capitata var. quartziticola is particularly noted for its large, almost spherical flower clusters, which may contain more than 100 flowers.

The species was formally described by Baker in 1883 and has been associated with several geographically and morphologically distinct varieties, including var. gneissicola, var. silvicola, var. cipolinicola, and var. quartziticola. Native populations have been affected by recurring grass fires, and frost can damage the flower clusters even where the plants themselves survive. Aloe capitata performs best in full sun and sharply drained soil, with occasional to infrequent watering once established. It is generally propagated from seed because offsets are rarely produced. The typical form is considered frost tender, tolerating approximately 30°F, while var. quartziticola is reported to withstand considerably lower temperatures. This aloe is best used as a specimen plant in containers, rock gardens, and waterwise landscapes where its colorful foliage and distinctive rounded flower clusters can be appreciated.
