Aloe castanea (Cat’s Tail Aloe) is a bold, architectural aloe for large-scale dry gardens, Aloe castanea (Cat’s Tail Aloe) grows into a sculptural shrub or small tree up to 10–12 feet tall. Native to northeastern South Africa, it features long, blue-green leaves lined with firm brown teeth and curling, cat’s-tail-shaped flower spikes in deep orange-brown hues. Its dark nectar attracts hummingbirds and pollinators during the winter bloom season, adding vital seasonal interest.

This winter-blooming aloe thrives in full sun with minimal water, making it ideal for xeriscapes, wildlife gardens, and rocky slopes. Over time, it develops upright branches and a dramatic silhouette, especially when lower leaves are left in place to form a textured skirt.

Plant in well-drained soil with occasional summer water for best flowering. Hardy to 20–25°F (USDA Zone 9a+), it’s suitable for both coastal and inland California gardens. Can be grown in large containers, though it prefers open ground.

A striking focal point for designers, collectors, and pollinator-friendly gardens alike—Aloe castanea offers structure, color, and wildlife value in one commanding package.
