Aloe chabaudii ‘Dan’s Tangerine’ is a clumping, winter-flowering aloe selected for its soft tangerine-orange flowers and its ability to form broad, well-structured clumps in the garden. It is a color form of Aloe chabaudii, a species native to southern and southeastern Africa, and is valued for its balanced growth, dependable cold tolerance, and adaptability to both full sun and light shade. Plants form stemless to short-stemmed rosettes about 1 to 2 feet tall, each composed of broad, bluish-green leaves that are widest at the base and taper gradually to the tips. In bright exposure, the foliage often develops pink to reddish tones, providing seasonal interest even outside the flowering period. Leaf margins carry small gray-white teeth, and the leaf surfaces are generally unspotted. Over time, plants sucker freely, creating dense, rounded colonies. Blooming occurs in mid-winter, when branched, pyramid-shaped inflorescences rise just above the foliage and carry multiple racemes of tubular flowers in shades of reddish-orange to pale tangerine. The species originates from summer-rainfall regions and responds well to occasional to regular irrigation during the growing season, provided soil drainage is good. ‘Dan’s Tangerine’ has proven hardy to about 25°F for short periods and is well suited to USDA Zone 9 and warmer. It works effectively as a massed planting on slopes, among rocks, or as a container specimen where its winter bloom can be appreciated.
The cultivar ‘Dan’s Tangerine’ was selected from a particularly attractive orange-flowered form and named by San Marcos Growers to honor Dr. Dan Ovadia, a Santa Barbara succulent collector from whom the original plant was obtained.
