Aloe ‘David’s Delight’ is an upright, branching hybrid derived from Aloe dawei and grown for its consistent flowering and adaptable performance in a range of light exposures, making it a familiar mid-sized aloe in Southern California landscapes. It forms clumps of vertical stems reaching 3 to 4 feet tall and roughly as wide, each stem lined with narrow green leaves that are slender, evergreen, and edged with soft teeth. The plant branches low, producing multiple upright shoots that maintain a tidy, erect outline suitable for mixed succulent beds, limited-space plantings, or use as a structural accent. It flowers for much of the year, peaking in mid to late summer, producing upright, branching inflorescences with red tubular flowers held well above the foliage; this prolonged bloom cycle is one of its defining traits and allows consistent color in mild climates. The hybrid is attributed to horticulturist David Verity of UCLA’s Mildred Mathias Botanic Garden, who distributed seedlings widely; one such plant grown by UCLA professor Boyd Walker proved distinctive and was later cultivated by San Marcos Growers, which presented a flowering specimen to Verity at the 2013 Aloe Summit, where he approved the name ‘David’s Delight’. The plant grows well in full sun to light shade with well-drained soil and only occasional irrigation, showing good drought tolerance once established. It withstands temperatures of about 20–25°F, consistent with USDA Zone 9b performance. In gardens it serves as a dependable upright accent, valued for its repeat flowering, manageable size, and ability to provide mid-height structure in waterwise and Mediterranean plantings.
