Aloe distans, also known as Jeweled Aloe or Golden Tooth Aloe, is a sprawling succulent native to South Africa's west coast, forming dense clusters with stems growing along the ground or climbing over rocks, reaching lengths of up to 3 meters. Its rosettes of blue-green leaves tipped with golden spines add to its ornamental appeal. During mid-summer to fall, it produces capitate heads of coral tubular flowers, attracting pollinators to the garden. Characterized by its compact, stemless rosette succulent, Aloe distans forms dense mounds with multiple rosettes, armed with firm yellowish teeth along the margins. Its leaves, growing up to 6 cm long and 2 cm wide at the base, exhibit a waxy blue-green or gray color, occasionally with scattered whitish spots. Blooming in the middle of the Western Cape dry season, typically from mid-summer to fall, its inflorescences are branched and terminate in up to four head-shaped racemes, each densely packed with coral tubular flowers ranging from dull orange-red to bright red in color. Indigenous to the west coast of South Africa, Aloe distans is found from Danger Point northwards to St. Helena Bay, thriving in well-drained soil and preferring full sun to light shade conditions. Drought-tolerant and adaptable to various climatic conditions, it exhibits moderate frost tolerance, with a winter hardiness range of 20-25°F. A versatile plant ideal for rock, succulent, and cactus gardens, Aloe distans serves as a fire-retardant ground cover, attracting bees, butterflies, and birds, enhancing biodiversity in xeriscape wildlife gardens.
