Aloe dorotheae ‘Canary Yellow’ is a cultivated selection of the East African species Aloe dorotheae grown for its bright yellow winter flowers and colorful, sun-responsive foliage. It forms a compact rosette typically about 1 foot tall and up to roughly 2 feet wide, composed of thick, triangular leaves that arch slightly outward to create a dense, sculptural form. The foliage is green with scattered pale spots and lined with pronounced marginal teeth, and in strong sunlight or cooler weather the leaves can develop vivid orange to reddish tones, a characteristic inherited from the species often known as sunset aloe. Flowering occurs in winter, when a slender stalk rises from the center of the rosette bearing a single upright spike of tubular flowers that open bright yellow—distinct from the orange to red flowers typical of the species. Aloe dorotheae ‘Canary Yellow’ retains the spotted foliage and sun-induced coloration of the species while offering this unusual yellow bloom color. It grows best in full sun with very well-drained soil and sparse irrigation once established, performing well in containers, rock gardens, and waterwise landscapes. Because it is adapted to warm climates, protection from prolonged freezing temperatures is recommended.
