Aloe forbesii, native to Socotra Island, Yemen, is a compact, multi-stemmed succulent valued for its blue-green leaves, which develop reddish-brown hues under stress. This small aloe forms tight rosettes with 6-inch leaves adorned with pale teeth along the edges. It grows to less than 1 foot tall and wide, making it one of the smallest Arabian aloes. From winter through summer, it produces foot-long, horizontal inflorescences with bicolored flowers, featuring orange-red buds that turn yellow as they open. Aloe forbesii thrives in full sun to partial shade and requires well-drained soil with infrequent watering once established. It can tolerate dry conditions and temperatures as low as 25°F, making it ideal for USDA zones 9b–11. Native to the rocky outcrops of the Haggeher Mountains, this aloe was first identified in the late 19th century and reinstated as a distinct species in 2011. Rare in cultivation, its small size and unique flower colors make it a popular choice for rock gardens, containers, or as an accent in xeriscapes, offering a low-maintenance option for succulent enthusiasts.
