Aloe harlana, commonly known as Harla Aloe, is a stemless, usually solitary aloe native to the highlands of Ethiopia. It forms a substantial rosette of spreading to upright, lance-shaped leaves that are dark olive-green with subtle pale longitudinal streaks and reddish-brown margins lined with small brown teeth. In spring, mature plants produce a branched flower stalk rising 2–3 feet above the foliage, with each branch carrying a conical raceme of tubular flowers. Flower color varies from deep wine-red to orange and yellow, with dark red buds opening progressively to reveal paler flowers lower on the raceme. Grow Aloe harlana in full sun to partial shade and sharply drained soil. Allow the soil to dry completely between thorough waterings, providing occasional irrigation during active growth and keeping it considerably drier during cool weather. It is drought tolerant and has been reported to tolerate temperatures around 25–30°F, although protection from prolonged hard freezes is advisable. Its substantial olive-green rosette and branched seasonal flowers make it well suited to dry gardens, rock gardens, succulent plantings and large containers.
