Aloe krapohliana

Aloe krapohliana, originating from South Africa, is a dwarf aloe, reaching no more than 10 inches in height. Typically solitary, its grey-green rosettes lack spots or spines on both upper and lower surfaces. While older specimens may show stems, most appear stemless with dense leaf arrangements. The thick leaves, about 3-5 inches long, are incurving and slightly bendable, with tiny teeth along the margins. In habitat, it blooms prolifically with thick, large inflorescences, sometimes double-branched, towering over the small bushes. Flowers, appearing in winter, are tubular and dull orange with greenish-yellow tips. Found in the arid Succulent Karoo of the Northern Cape, it is vulnerable to overgrazing, collecting, and mining activities. Cultivation outside its natural habitat is challenging, as it is intolerant to overwatering and thrives in arid conditions. Aloe krapohliana is cold hardy down to at least 22 F and can be cultivated in hot and dry rock gardens, preferably in mild climates. However, its small size may make it easily overlooked in outdoor landscaping.
