Aloe labworana, endemic to Uganda and southern Sudan, is a stemless aloe with compact rosettes of 20 to 30-inch-long by 4-inch-wide spotted leaves in shades of blue-green to gray. These leaves feature small red-brown teeth along the edges and form attractive, spreading, recurved rosettes reaching about 4 feet in diameter and 3 feet tall. In late autumn to winter, this species produces spectacular, yellow flowers on multibranched inflorescences. It thrives on rocky outcrops and is commonly cultivated for its ornamental flowers. To cultivate, plant in full sun in well-drained soil and irrigate occasionally to infrequently. Cold hardy to around 25° F, Aloe labworana adds a splash of color to winter gardens.
