Aloe lavranosii, native to southern Yemen, is a medium-sized solitary or occasionally offsetting Arabian aloe with broad, bluish-purplish leaves. The stemless plant features spreading, tapering leaves with prominent teeth, often turning pink with drought stress. Its dull grey olive green to brownish green leaves may appear deep blue-green in shade. The species boasts 'hairy' flowers, occurring in mid-summer on tall, multi-branched inflorescences, typically pale yellow but varying to shades of orange to scarlet. A relatively sparse amount of hairs cover the flowers, which are found in Yemen on the Arabian Peninsula. Best suited for warm temperate or dry tropical climates in USDA Zones 9 and above, this plant is drought-tolerant and a unique addition to gardens. Aloe lavranosii is a fun plant to grow from seed due to its unpredictable outcomes.
