Aloe marlothii “Utrecht form” is a trunk-forming aloe with broad, spiny gray-green leaves and dramatic winter blooms. Native to southern Africa, this variant is distinguished by its deep red flowers—darker than the standard orange-yellow of the species—and originates from a red-flowered population in Utrecht, KwaZulu-Natal.
Plants form solitary trunks reaching 8–10 feet tall, crowned by a rosette of broad, upward-arching leaves heavily armed with reddish-brown spines. In late fall through winter, mature specimens produce wide, multi-branched inflorescences held at horizontal angles—each branch lined with vivid red tubular flowers that draw hummingbirds and pollinators.
Best grown in full sun with well-drained soil. Once established, it requires little to no supplemental irrigation and thrives in hot, dry climates. Cold hardy to 20–25°F (USDA Zone 9a+), this aloe is ideal for large-scale landscapes, desert gardens, or open areas where its size and structure can be fully appreciated.
