Aloe mawii "Mozambique Form", also known as Khuzi, is a shrubby succulent native to Mozambique and southern Tanzania, growing up to 4-6 feet tall with dense rosettes of grey-green leaves tinged with red. Unlike the tree-like Malawi Form, this form is more branched and compact. The leaves, about 2 feet long with orange-brown teeth along the margins, often turn red in winter. It blooms in mid-winter with reddish-orange flowers featuring blue-purple stamens, adding a unique color combination to gardens. Best suited for full sun and well-drained soils, Aloe mawii "Mozambique Form" has low water needs and tolerates temperatures down to 25-30°F. However, it may sustain damage at 27°F, making it better for coastal or frost-free areas. Native to grassy, rocky slopes at elevations of 1,800 to 6,000 feet, the plant was named after Captain A.H. Maw, who collected the type specimen in Malawi. Known by names such as Chinthembwe and Khuzi in its native regions, this Aloe is an excellent choice for xeriscaping, rock gardens, and borders, offering year-round visual interest with its striking foliage and colorful winter blooms.
