Aloe millotii, or Millot’s Aloe, is a compact succulent native to southern Madagascar, particularly the Cap Sainte-Marie region. It grows as a small, ground-hugging plant with branching, wiry stems that reach up to 20 inches long, though the plant itself typically stays under 8 inches tall. Its narrow, recurved leaves are pale green to reddish-brown depending on sun and water exposure, with small white teeth along the margins, and often shift from a distichous to spiral arrangement as the plant matures. In spring or occasionally at other times, it produces slender 12-inch flower stalks bearing reddish-orange tubular flowers tipped with green, which attract hummingbirds and pollinators. Aloe millotii is adapted to its native limestone habitats, growing in full sun or partial shade amid coastal winds. First described in 1955 and named after Jacques Millot, it is closely related to Aloe antandroi and Aloe decaryi but remains smaller and more delicate. It thrives in gritty, well-drained soil with infrequent watering, especially during its winter dormancy, and benefits from occasional feeding during the growing season. Hardy to around 25–30°F, it is suited for USDA Zones 9b–11, though best grown in containers for protection in colder climates. Valued for its compact size, unique texture, and colorful flowers, Aloe millotii fits well in rock gardens, small succulent displays, and container collections, appealing to both novice and experienced gardeners.
