Aloe mubendiensis, or Mubende Aloe, is an evergreen succulent native to Uganda, Africa. It forms dense clusters of compact rosettes with spotted leaves displaying bronze, purple, and green hues. During the fall, it produces branching inflorescences bearing dark brick-red flowers, adding to its ornamental appeal. This medium-sized stemless aloe reaches widths of 12-18 inches and heights of 6-12 inches, with leaves around 1 foot long and 2-3 inches wide. It prefers well-drained, rocky soil and full sun, thriving in low-water landscapes and rock gardens. Endemic to Uganda, it grows in the Toro District near Mubende, primarily on isolated granite outcroppings. Aloe mubendiensis is closely related to Aloe schweinfurthii and Aloe labworana, and its specific epithet "mubendiensis" reflects its native location. Hardy down to temperatures of 25-30°F, it is suitable for USDA zones 9b-12 and may attract hummingbirds and beneficial insects in the garden.
