Aloe palmiformis, commonly known as Angolan Krantz Aloe, is a sparsely clustering species from southwestern Angola, where it grows on sandstone rocks in woodland at elevations of approximately 4,100–4,900 feet. It develops slender, upright stems to about 5 feet tall, topped with open rosettes of roughly 14 laxly arranged leaves. The dull green leaves may have reddish tones and small pale spots toward the base, with prominent pale brown teeth along the margins. The species has an unusual palm-like appearance, which inspired its name. In late fall and winter, its inflorescence rises well above the foliage and may produce up to four branches bearing cylindrical racemes of rose-scarlet to red-orange flowers. Closely related to Aloe gossweileri, A. palmiformis differs in having a less extensively branched inflorescence and flowers that are not arranged to one side of the raceme. Grow in full sun to partial shade in well-drained soil and water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. It has proven hardy to approximately 30°F at San Marcos Growers, although its cold tolerance is not well documented. Its unusual form, relatively large size, and uncommon status in cultivation make it particularly suitable for collectors and dry gardens where it has room to develop.
