Aloe peglerae, an unusual and striking stemless South African aloe, is distinguished by its stunning turquoise color and lack of spines on the inside surfaces of its leaves. Growing as solitary rosettes or occasionally forming small groups, this aloe features spreading leaves arranged in a neat, rounded head. The rosettes reach a diameter of 30-40 centimeters, with the entire plant standing at a height of similar dimensions. The leaves, with their blue-grey hue, curve inward, giving the plant a spherical appearance. While the plant remains stemless, it tightly clasps in dry conditions, resembling an anemone curling into a protective ball. The leaves, slightly bendable and adorned with whitish spines on new growth and reddish-brown spines on older leaves, exhibit a blush that can be rubbed off to reveal a greener color beneath. Despite its slow growth, Aloe peglerae is a fully-formed treasure even when small. Resembling Aloe humilis but with thicker and more rigid leaves, this unique succulent is classified as an endangered species, endemic to specific regions in South Africa. Its winter flowering season sees the development of single, fat flower stalks bearing bright red flowers with characteristic dull red buds and purplish stamens. The species faces threats from over-collection and habitat destruction, with conservation efforts crucial for its survival.
