Aloe reynoldsii, a rare species native to the Eastern Cape of South Africa, is characterized by its smooth, spineless leaves and short stem, typically reaching up to 2 feet in height. Found exclusively on south-facing cliffs along the Mbashe River, this aloe boasts pale green leaves adorned with white spots on both upper and lower surfaces, along with wavy margins. Resembling Aloe striata superficially, Aloe reynoldsii distinguishes itself with its flower color and subtle leaf mottling. Growing in rosette formations, often surrounded by dry leaves that persist on the stem, it prefers coastal full sun to partial sun inland, thriving in well-drained soil with morning sunlight and afternoon shade. Despite its preference for sunlight, it fares poorly in intense, arid conditions. Flowering from mid-winter to spring, it produces yellow to yellow-orange tubular flowers in multi-branched inflorescences, reminiscent of an umbrella in shape. Named in honor of Aloe specialist G.W. Reynolds, Aloe reynoldsii faces threats from habitat invasion and illegal collection but benefits from its inaccessible cliff-face habitat, reducing immediate danger. Hardy down to around 27°F, it may require protection from moderate frost. Well-suited to rockeries, water-wise gardens, and container cultivation, Aloe reynoldsii adds a unique charm to gardens, thriving in areas with cool winters and minimal frost.
