Aloe sabaea is a solitary tree aloe native to Yemen, reaching heights of up to 12 feet. Its striking appearance includes long, drooping pale green to grey-green leaves, often cascading to the ground, giving it a graceful allure. The plant's leaves, varying from pale to deeper green, typically drape along the stem, occasionally extending laterally. With stems not retaining old leaves, its appearance is reminiscent of a scene from Dr. Seuss, often growing at angles due to wind. Whitish, bluntish marginal teeth adorn the leaves. Aloe sabaea blooms in winter, displaying dark red to yellow-orange flowers on open racemes, protruding slightly from the ends. These flowers appear on tall, upright inflorescences, contributing to the plant's impressive height and width. Originating from remote regions of Yemen and southern Saudi Arabia, Aloe sabaea thrives in stony, barren soils at intermediate elevations. Named after the Roman designation for Arabia Felix, it was described by Georg Agustus Schweinfurth in 1894 during his travels in the region. Thriving in full sun and well-drained soil, Aloe sabaea is relatively slow-growing, taking about a decade to reach flowering height. Protecting it from temperatures below 27°F is essential for its well-being. To ensure its survival, safeguard Aloe sabaea from temperatures below 27°F. Its distinctive drooping form makes Aloe sabaea a striking addition to gardens in mild climates. Suitable for USDA Zones 9-10, it not only attracts birds and butterflies but also proves resistant to deer.
