Salm-Dyck Aloe, scientifically known as Aloe salm-dyckiana, is a hybrid succulent resulting from extensive interbreeding between Aloe ferox and Aloe arborescens. This large shrub Aloe reaches a mature height of 8 to 10 feet and produces enormous, branched inflorescences with flowers of deep scarlet, tangerine, orange, or a combination thereof, depending on its lineage. Featuring dark gray-green leaves and upright-branching inflorescences with dark red flowers, it blooms from late fall to early winter. It requires low humidity and well-drained soil, making it suitable for bedding or border planting and as a specimen plant. Flowering from January to February and November to December, its enormous inflorescences attract birds and butterflies, adding to its ornamental appeal. Thought to be a naturally occurring hybrid, Salm-Dyck Aloe has a long history of cultivation under various names, including Aloe x principis. It prefers full sun exposure and is hardy to temperatures down to 25°F, making it suitable for USDA zones 9-11. With its impressive size and vibrant flowers, it serves as a striking specimen plant or as part of a bedding or border display, attracting wildlife to the garden.
