Aloe Scarlet Rockets 'LEO 3711', also known as Super Red Sunbird Aloe, is a compact, upright cultivar developed by Leo Thamm of Sunbird Aloes in South Africa. Forming neat rosettes that reach 4 to 5 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, it features long, narrow grey-green leaves edged with regularly spaced yellow-green teeth. This aloe is known for its prolific winter blooming, producing dark red flowers on well-branched inflorescences that rise just above the foliage. In the northern hemisphere, blooming typically starts in late summer and can extend into late February, while in southern regions, flowering may continue further into the year. Introduced to the U.S. in 2012, the plant is sold as 'Scarlet Rockets' domestically and as 'Super Red' overseas, receiving Plant Breeders Rights protection in 2010. It thrives in full sun with well-drained soil and requires only occasional summer irrigation once established. Hardy to approximately 25–30°F (USDA Zone 9a), Aloe Scarlet Rockets may sustain damage under prolonged freezing but performs well in mild, coastal climates. Its strong architectural form, extended bloom season, and ability to attract pollinators make it ideal for water-wise gardens, mixed borders, succulent plantings, and large containers.
