Aloe schelpei is a small, clumping succulent native to the highlands of Ethiopia, where it grows on rocky slopes and steep grasslands at elevations around 7,000 feet. Discovered in 1952 and described in 1961, the species honors botanist Dr. Edmund Schelpe. This evergreen aloe forms spreading rosettes that reach 1 to 2 feet tall, with mature clumps spreading 3 to 5 feet wide. Its blue-green leaves are narrow, gracefully recurved, and edged with soft pink to red margins, providing year-round color and architectural texture. In late fall, typically from November into December, it produces branched inflorescences rising 1 to 2 feet above the foliage, bearing dense clusters of tubular flowers that shift from deep red buds to pale orange blooms, attracting pollinators. Adapted to full sun and gritty, well-drained soils, Aloe schelpei requires minimal water once established and benefits from dry summer conditions, making it ideal for xeriscapes and rock gardens. It is hardy to approximately 25–30°F, suitable for USDA Zone 9a, though prolonged freezes should be avoided. With its compact size, drought tolerance, and seasonal floral display, Aloe schelpei works well in containers, raised beds, and water-wise landscapes where it offers both structure and color.
