Aloe sinkatana, commonly known as Sudan aloe, is a small, evergreen, clump-forming species native to arid regions of eastern Sudan, where it grows in sandy soils on plains, hills, and around seasonal watercourses. In cultivation it forms stemless to short-stemmed rosettes that offset freely, creating low mounded clumps typically 1 to 3 feet wide over time. Individual rosettes are often about a foot across, with light green to blue-green leaves marked by irregular white blotches that may form loose bands; foliage can take on reddish tones under sun and drought. Leaf margins are edged with short pink to brownish teeth, giving the plant a lightly armored appearance. Flowering is most reliable in winter and may repeat, with relatively short stalks carrying dense, rounded to pyramidal clusters of tubular flowers that range from yellow to orange or red depending on clone. The species was described by Reynolds and named for Sinkat, Sudan, and wild populations have experienced pressure from medicinal harvesting, with some sources listing it as endangered. Aloe sinkatana grows best in very well-drained soil with full sun to partial shade, moderate water during warm growth, and drier winter conditions. Cold tolerance is variable but generally limited to light frost, with protection advised below the mid-20s °F. It is well suited to containers, rock gardens, and small succulent plantings where its foliage pattern and winter flowers can be appreciated.
