Aloe striatula, a shrubby and sprawling species reaching up to 6 feet in height and width, thrives in mountainous regions, making it one of South Africa's hardier aloes. Its dark green, recurved leaves are adorned with small white teeth along the margins and distinct longitudinal stripes on the leaf sheaths, giving rise to its specific name, 'striatula.' Resembling a slender version of Aloe arborescens, it forms colonies with rosettes of bright green leaves, growing upright and sometimes reaching the entire length of the stem. The plant produces brilliant yellow inflorescences in late spring to summer, densely packed on tall, unbranched racemes. Originating from the Karoo to the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa and southern Lesotho, it thrives in extreme temperatures and rocky outcrops at altitudes of 500m to 1500m. Aloe striatula is resilient, tolerating frost down to 15°F and requiring full sun and well-drained soil. It's highly adaptable, making it suitable for subtropical, Mediterranean, or desert-themed gardens, and it serves well as a living fence or background plant, adding both aesthetic appeal and functionality to any landscape.
