Aloe tongaensis ‘Medusa’, commonly called the Mozambique Tree Aloe, is a slow-growing, branching tree aloe that reaches approximately 8–12 feet tall and 4–6 feet wide. Unlike the single-trunk form of many tree aloes, it develops multiple heavy stems and begins branching at a relatively young age. Its pale green, flexible leaves reach about 18 inches long and may develop orange coloration during cooler weather. Native to coastal areas of southeastern Africa, including Mozambique and KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, it grows in sandy and coastal habitats. Flowering occurs from late fall into early winter, often around December, with stout stems rising above the foliage and branching into compact clusters of pale orange buds that open to pale salmon-colored flowers. The form is closely related to Aloe barberae but differs in its earlier branching, smaller stature, and distinctly different flowers. ‘Medusa’ is technically an incorrect cultivar designation for this naturally occurring form, but the name is well established in cultivation. It performs best in full sun and well-drained soil and has low water requirements, although irrigation and fertilization during warm weather can increase growth. It is reported to survive temperatures around 22°F, while exposure to 20°F caused severe damage to established plants. Aloe tongaensis ‘Medusa’ is well suited as a specimen tree aloe for warm, sunny gardens where its branching habit, seasonal foliage color, and pale salmon flowers can be appreciated.
