Aloe vryheidensis, commonly known as Vryheid Aloe, is a relatively large, solitary Aloe native to mountainous areas of northeastern South Africa, where it grows on exposed rocky slopes at elevations of approximately 2,950–5,900 feet. It may remain stemless or develop a trunk up to about 6.5 feet tall, topped with 20–40 greyish-green leaves that can take on reddish tones under dry conditions. The leaves are erect to spreading, slightly channelled, and edged with reddish teeth. In winter, a tall, simple inflorescence rises well above the foliage, bearing a cylindrical raceme of pink to brownish-yellow, bell-shaped flowers. Closely related to Aloe spicata, it differs in its shorter, less spreading and less strongly channelled leaves, while the form formerly known as Aloe dolomitica is now considered the same species. Grow in well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade and allow the soil to dry between waterings. It is considered suitable for warm temperate climates and is generally rated for USDA Zone 9 and above, although a specific minimum temperature is not well documented. Its substantial size and upright, stem-forming habit make it useful as an architectural plant in dry landscapes, rock gardens, and succulent collections, with container culture particularly appropriate while young.
